PRS Link on OFDM Wireless Network

AMARKANTAK was one of the Microwave Stations under Bilaspur Division earlier connected to BILASPUR Microwave. There old Microwave Towers of height around 100m at both Amarkantak and Bilaspur. These towers are still in good condition. In view this available infrastructure with Railways it was planned to commission data link required for referred Non-Rail Head PRS at Amarkantak Post Office using High Frequency Wireless Technology (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing). Accordingly planning was done and using RADWIN Radio Equipments with suitable antennas around 80 KM Single Hop Data Link between Bilaspur and Amarkantak was commissioned in a record time of 3 days. Antennas were fixed at height of around 80m at both Amarkantak and Bilaspur. Local connectivity between Amarkantak Microwave Tower and Post Office was also done on similar wireless link. From Bilaspur PRS to Bilaspur Microwave Tower available local lead on CU Wire was used. The link since its commissioning on date 09.05.14 is working satisfactorily and the performance is far better than those of hired channels. A schematic diagram of the system commissioned is shown below:

There are many benefits of having our own link using free band wireless media vis-à-vis hired channel. Some of them are listed below:

1.No annual recurring Port/Bandwidth Charges will be required after one time installation cost.

2.The complete system with monitoring system will be under Railway’s control which will help in early identification and rectification of any faults/failures.

3.Apart from 2 MBPS dedicated Ethernet, this system will be upgradable for E1 connectivity also. This may help in extending other circuits like Railnet etc. to Amarkantak in future as per requirement.
